Eurotrip 2015
Unfortunately, this trip is cancelled!! Sorry for any students who have expressed interest in this trip.

The Burnaby North Social Studies Department "Life Experiences Program" is pleased to announce next year's trip. 2015 will not be an "Eurotrip". Spring Break 2015 will venture to South America! It will feature a 10 day tour of Brazil and Argentina.
The trip begins with a flight into Rio de Janeiro. Rio is one of the host cities of the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the host of the 2016 Olympic Summer Games. Stylish, sophisticated Rio thrills visitors with its beautiful beaches, stunning mountains, and innovative buildings. Most impressive may be the soaring cathedral, whose vast interior can accommodate 25,000 people. Four enormous stained-glass windows throw colored light down on the space, unbroken by columns or other supports. Back outside, you may feel that you've escaped to Paris -- the theater house and art museum were modeled after Paris's ornate Opéra Garnier and Louvre museum.
Our trip to Rio includes the trip up Sugar Loaf Mountain. It may be one of the most spectacular glass-elevator ride ever. Sugar Loaf Mountain (named because it resembles the ceramic mold used to refine sugar cane) rises up from the intersection of Guanabara Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. We will take a glass-sided cable car up the peak, where we will find amazing views of the entire city and beyond.

Another highlight will be the Corcovado Mountain. We will ascend via cogwheel train. It is Rio's most spectacular landmark. We will go up Corcovado ("hunchback") Mountain on a Swiss-made cogwheel train, through the lush Tijuca National Forest, and arrive at the top to see the statue of Christ the Redeemer that gazes out over the city. The views from the mountain are astounding, as is the statue itself. It stands almost 100 feet tall and weighs over 1000 tons.
We will cap off the day with a Brazilian Evening. We will indulge in the flavours, sounds, and sights of traditional Brazilian culture, from samba dancing to capoeira martial arts.
Our fourth day includes a cruise of the Guanabara Bay. One of the best ways to see Rio is from the water. This half day cruise around Rio de Janeiro enjoys one of the most beautiful and dramatic settings of any city in the world and this delightful Guanabara Bay cruise reveals the Rio and its famous landmarks in all their glory. We will relax on a comfortable boat while we admire the magnificent cityscape backed by the iconic Sugar Loaf and the towering mass of Corcovado.
On Day 5, we will fly to Iguaçu Falls. The sixth day will be our tour of the Falls. The spray from the enormous and spectacular waterfalls in the Iguaçu National Park create a lush rainforest environment filled with unique animals. We will have to keep an eye out for giant otters and giant anteaters, as well as exquisite orchids and other plants, as we explore. We will get up close and personal with Iguaçu Falls, which splashes down from more than 50 feet above. A stone staircase leads up to the Iguaçu River above. We will then cruise the Iguaçu River.
On Day 7, we say good-bye to Brazil and hello to Argentina as we fly to Buenos Aires. Day 8 greets us with a guided sightseeing tour of Buenos Aires. Smoldering with history, beauty, and passion, Buenos Aires' streets and plazas exude a sophistication unrivalled in South America. We will start at the city's most historic and arresting square, the Plaza de Mayo, where Evita addressed crowds from the balcony of Casa Rosada. The stark Neoclassical cathedral stands nearby; its twelve columns represent the twelve apostles. We will see the diversity of Buenos Aires' neighborhoods as we tour the barrios of La Boca, Puerto Madero, and Recoleta (where Evita is buried). Other highlights include the Obelisk on 9 de Julio Avenue, Colon Theater, Plaza de Mayo, Plaza de San Martin, La Recoleta, Puerto Madero. We will have some free time on Day 9 before flying home to Vancouver.
This trip is going to have 4 flights and two river cruises. It will be the first time that the "Life Experiences Program" has ventured into South America. Since 2001, we have traveled extensively through Europe, parts of Asia and Northern Africa. In 2015, we will add South America to our list of destinations!
