Eurotrip 2004 - Madrid and Adalucia
The 2004 Eurotrip to Spain was a unique experience. On the morning of March 11, 2004 (the day of our departure), a commuter train bombing occurred in Madrid. Consequently, many of the parents chose not to participate. As a result, we had only two students along with three teacher-chaperones participated. It was one of the most incredible trips we've taken at Burnaby North.
The train bombing meant that our itinerary had to be changed. After landing in Madrid, we traveled to Cordoba south of Madrid. The highlight of Cordoba is the Mezquita-Catedral (Mosque-Cathedral). Origins of the Mezquita-Catedral can be traced back to 600. It was a Christian Visigoth church which turned into a mosque after the Islamic conquest of the Visigoths. Instead of tearing it down, a mosque was built around the site. During the Middle Ages (1236), the region was taken back by the Christians. The mosque was converted back to Christianity. Over the next few centuries, additions were added to this Cathedral. Visitors can clearly see the architectural additions made over the centuries. In 1984, this site became a UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Mezquita-Catedral is one of the most spectacular sites in the world!
